Runway is not a video generation company anymore. Or at least, that’s what Runway is trying to tell you.
On August 31, 2026, Runway announced Solaris — a research preview they’re calling the first Interface World Model. It doesn’t generate video clips you export and use somewhere else. It generates a live, interactive software interface, frame by frame, with no code underneath. You interact with the screen. The model renders the next frame based on what you did. There’s no HTML. There’s no CSS. There’s no DOM. There is no software in the traditional sense — just a model generating pixels in real time that behave like software.
That’s the bet. And it’s a large one.
What Solaris Actually Is
Let me be clear about the mechanics before we talk about what they mean, because “AI generates software interfaces” is the kind of headline that gets distorted in both directions — either inflated into a revolutionary demo or dismissed as vaporware.
Solaris is built on Runway’s Gen-4.5 video model, the same model that powers Runway’s video generation tools. The key architectural insight is that a video model generates frames sequentially, where each frame depends on what came before. In video generation, those prior frames are previous images in a clip. In Solaris, they’re previous states of an interface — and user interactions like clicks and drags are treated as conditioning signals for the next frame, the same way a text prompt or reference image is used in video generation.
The result: a live 720p interface that responds to your actions, without any underlying DOM or accessibility APIs.
Runway splits the intelligence across two systems. A language model handles the reasoning layer — it interprets what you’re asking, decides what should change, and generates prompts. A world model handles the rendering layer — it synthesizes what the resulting state looks like. One brain, one paint brush, passing instructions back and forth at interactive speeds.
In Runway’s own user study — their numbers, their study — people preferred Solaris over a coded interface built by Claude Opus 5 by 61% to 24% on following instructions, and 71% to 21% on behaving naturally. Those are striking numbers from a research preview. They’re also Runway’s numbers, so read them with the skepticism that requires.
The Strategic Move Here
There’s a pattern in how AI companies evolve: you start with the most legible, demonstrable version of your capability, prove the model can do something impressive, and then use that foothold to expand the surface area of what the model is for.
OpenAI started with text generation, added images, then video, then voice, then agents. Google did the same. Runway started with video generation, built the best cinematic text-to-video model on the market, accumulated the training data and engineering infrastructure that comes with that, and is now using the underlying world-model architecture to build something that generates interactive software rather than passive clips.
The pivot from video to interfaces is more natural than it sounds. Runway’s Gen-4 lineage wasn’t just trained to generate pretty clips — it was trained to model how things move, how visual states transition, how the world looks in response to change. Solaris applies that same capability to a different domain: instead of modeling how a scene looks after an action in the world, it models how a screen looks after a user action. The architecture is different enough to be a genuine research contribution. It’s similar enough to what Runway already does that building it made sense for them and probably no one else.
This is also a land grab. The Rundown AI framed Solaris as previewing “the no-code internet,” and that framing captures the competitive logic: if an interface can be generated rather than assembled, the value in software shifts.
That’s a very different business than selling subscriptions to a video editor.
Why Runway, Pika, and Kling Are Now Playing Different Games

Pika and Kling are excellent at what they do. Kling 3.0 is the best value in the AI video generation category, with native 4K output, the most generous free tier in the market, and 15-second max clip durations (Source). Pika’s Inflate feature and stylized aesthetic make it the right pick for social creators who want something visually distinct. Both of them are competing hard on video — better models, better pricing, more features in the clip generation workflow.
Runway is competing on something else now. Or at least, Runway wants to be.
The risk for Runway is that “platform ambition” is the kind of announcement that can hollow out a core business. Developers and creative teams who use Runway’s Gen-4.5 for cinematic text-to-video need Runway to keep shipping great video tools, not just research previews of interfaces that don’t work at scale yet. If Kling closes the quality gap on video output while Runway is allocating R&D toward Solaris, that’s a real competitive problem.
But here’s the other read: Runway’s Solaris research preview is not a product launch. It’s a signal. Companies in Runway’s position — well-funded, technically credible, with a proven model architecture — don’t announce research previews for fun. They announce them to recruit engineers, shape investor narratives, attract launch partners, and establish prior art in a category they intend to own. Solaris is all of those things at once.
Runway’s expansion into the interfaces category also makes sense in the context of competition from above. OpenAI has video. Google has video. Meta has video. Every major lab has or will have a capable video generation model. The ceiling on Runway’s video business is constrained by the size of the creative market and the speed of commoditization. An interface world model, if it works at scale, is addressable across every piece of software on the internet. That’s a much larger ceiling.
The Real Open Problems
AI Weekly’s coverage was blunt about the gaps, and Runway themselves listed four problems the model doesn’t yet handle. I’ll give them credit for publishing the limitations alongside the demo — that’s better than most research announcements.
Text legibility. Stable, legible text is one of the hardest problems in video generation. It’s also central to software interfaces. Menus, labels, buttons, form fields — they all depend on text that doesn’t drift or smear across frames. Runway acknowledges this is unsolved. For any application where text accuracy matters (which is most applications), this isn’t a minor limitation.
Grounded trust. A convincing wrong answer is worse than an obvious wrong answer. If Solaris generates an interface for a banking app or a medical record system, the output needs to be accurate, not just believable. Runway explicitly flags instructional and commercial use cases as still unsolved. This is the right thing to say. It also means the use cases where generated interfaces would be most valuable are exactly the ones that don’t work yet.
Long-session coherence. A model that generates one frame at a time runs into trouble when those frames need to stay consistent over a long session. A 30-minute session of interacting with a generated app means thousands of frames, each conditioned on the previous state. Drift accumulates. State gets lost. Runway knows this.
Accessibility. This one matters more than the coverage generally acknowledges. Screen readers, keyboard navigation, ARIA attributes, and other assistive technologies all depend on a structured representation of the interface — a DOM that exposes machine-readable information about controls and their state. Generated pixels don’t have that. A video stream of a button that looks like a button is not a button. Building accessible generated interfaces isn’t a roadmap feature — it may require a fundamentally different architecture.
These are honest limitations, not disqualifying ones for a research preview. But anyone describing Solaris as “the future of software” in the next breath should spend a few minutes thinking about what it would take to make it work for a deaf user, or someone using a form for healthcare enrollment, or a developer trying to test their generated interface with a screen reader.
What It Means If You’re Choosing Between Runway, Pika, and Kling Today
Short answer: nothing changes yet.
Solaris is a research preview. There’s no public API. There’s no pricing. There’s no general availability. Runway is taking early-access requests and working with undisclosed launch partners. If you’re a creative team generating video content today, your decision between Runway Gen-4.5, Kling 3.0, and Pika is entirely unaffected by the Solaris announcement.
What does change is the long-arc read on each company’s direction.
Runway is signaling that video generation is infrastructure for something larger. Whether that larger thing becomes a real product in 12 months or stays a research demo for three years is genuinely unknown. What’s knowable is that Runway is allocating serious engineering resources toward a category that, if it works, makes the video subscription business look small.
Kling and Pika are not making that bet. They are competing to be the best AI video generator, full stop. For most creative professionals, that focus is the better near-term product bet. Runway’s long-game play might pay off enormously. It might also mean that Runway’s video tools receive less attention as the research team chases the bigger prize.
If Runway’s video tools matter to your workflow, watch what happens to Gen-4.5 over the next two quarters. If it keeps shipping updates at the same pace — better quality, more clip lengths, more model variants — the Solaris announcement is just a research sideline. If updates slow while the research paper count goes up, that’s a signal.
The no-code internet is a large bet. Runway might win it. But the company that wins it may not be the same company that’s the best AI video generator in 2027.
