About 90% of the time Midjourney appears broken, the problem is not the AI.

It is a service incident, a queue limit, or a subscription issue. Those take 30 seconds to check if you know where to look. Prompt debugging is a distant fourth cause.

Here is how to diagnose and fix Midjourney when it is not working, in the order that covers most problems first.

Why Is Midjourney Not Working: Check Status First

Before anything else, go to status.midjourney.com.

The page shows real-time status for two things: the website and the Discord bot. They can be in different states during a partial outage, so check both. The status page also shows average generation wait times by model. If V8 Fast is showing 39 seconds instead of 1 second, that is load, not a configuration problem on your end.

What you are looking for: any component showing degraded performance or an outage. Generation issues usually appear under the website or image generation components. If those are down, nothing else you do will fix it.

The official Midjourney Discord server also has a #status channel with more granular incident updates. During active problems, that channel often has detail the status page does not.

If everything is green and you are still having issues, keep reading.

Midjourney Web App Errors (The Primary Interface)

The Midjourney web app at midjourney.com is the primary interface for generation, job management, and account settings. If you are using the website and something is wrong, start here.

Jobs stuck on “Submitting…” or not appearing in your feed. A known issue is jobs that stall while submitting. As of October 2026, stalled submissions fail cleanly within 2 minutes, and jobs that completed in the background show up in your feed after the timeout. Give it that window before resubmitting.

Jobs show as completed but no image appears. Reload the page. The job may have completed but the feed did not update. If the image is still missing after a reload, use the Re-run option on that job.

An account error message appears in the interface. The web app surfaces account problems directly now. If you see an error about your account, it is accurate. Check your subscription status and remaining Fast hours in account settings at midjourney.com.

The web app keeps logging you out or shows a blank screen. Clear your browser cache, try a different browser, or disable browser extensions that might interfere with JavaScript or login cookies. The web app requires both to function.

Midjourney Discord Bot Not Responding

If you use Midjourney through Discord, the bot issues are distinct from web app issues.

Type /info in the channel. This is a basic bot command. If nothing happens, the bot is not active in that channel or server. If it responds with your account info, the bot is working and your issue is elsewhere.

The bot shows offline in the member list. This happens during Midjourney updates and Discord maintenance windows. Wait 5-10 minutes. If it has been offline longer than 30 minutes and status.midjourney.com shows green, check the official Midjourney Discord to see if the bot is active there. If it is, the issue is your server.

You added the bot to your own server and it stopped working. The most common cause is missing permissions. The bot needs: Send Messages, Embed Links, Attach Files, Read Message History, and Add Reactions. Find the Midjourney Bot entry in your channel permission settings and verify these are all enabled. If permissions look correct but it still does not work, remove and re-add the bot.

Bot returns “You don’t have permission.” This is a channel or server restriction, not a subscription problem. Check with the server admin.

You are trying to use Midjourney via DM. Direct messages to the bot require prior interaction in a server where the bot is present. Start in one of Midjourney’s public channels or add the bot to your own server first.

Job Queue Errors (Queue Full, Slow Generation)

“Job queue full.” Common error, not a hard stop.

Midjourney limits how many jobs run at once. Current plan limits from midjourney.com:

  • Basic ($10/month): 3 concurrent Fast image jobs, 1 Fast video job
  • Standard ($30/month): 3 concurrent Fast image jobs, 3 Fast video jobs, unlimited Relax image generations
  • Pro ($60/month): 12 concurrent Fast image jobs, 6 Fast video jobs, unlimited Relax image and SD video
  • Mega ($120/month): 12 concurrent Fast image jobs, 12 Fast video jobs, unlimited Relax image and SD video

On Standard and above, Relax mode has no concurrent limit on image generation. Jobs take longer in Relax mode. The status page shows current averages: V8 Relax runs about 39 seconds, V7 Relax about 49 seconds. For exploratory work where speed does not matter, Relax mode is the right default.

Generation is slow but not throwing errors. Check the status page wait times first. Load varies by time of day and by model choice. V7’s 20-second Fast time is significantly slower than V8’s 1 second. If speed matters, model choice makes a real difference.

You ran out of Fast hours. Check your usage in the web app under account settings, or type /info in Discord. Once Fast hours are exhausted, generation falls back to Relax mode automatically. Additional Fast hours are available for purchase from account settings.

Midjourney Thinking Mode Problems

Thinking Mode launched in alpha on October 8, 2026. Users encountering it for the first time often do not understand why it is not in the main app.

What it is. Thinking Mode reruns a finished V8.2 image with extra processing. According to Midjourney’s own testing, it helps with prompt accuracy, typography, and scene coherence. The mechanism: Midjourney looks at the generated image, identifies where it missed your prompt (wrong objects, layout, anatomy, text), and generates again.

Where to find it. Thinking Mode is only available at alpha.midjourney.com, not the main app. To use it, generate an image with V8.2, open the lightbox, and click “Rerun (Thinking)” in the lower right corner. It works on V8.2 standard and edit jobs only.

It is not visible in the main app. Correct. This is an alpha feature as of November 2026. Midjourney says it may eventually make Thinking Mode broadly available, or as an option to add more processing to a finished job, but that has not happened yet. If you do not see it, you are on the main app. Go to alpha.midjourney.com instead.

Thinking Mode reruns are slower. The extra processing takes more time than a standard generation. That is expected behavior, not a problem.

If you want background on what Thinking Mode means for Midjourney’s direction, the concept is straightforward: applying extended computation to image generation, not just text generation. The question Midjourney is testing is whether that extra compute produces meaningfully better outputs. Early access is through the alpha site.

Image Generation Failed / Invalid Parameter Errors

The job ran and nothing came back, or you got a parameter error.

Content policy block. Midjourney’s content filters silently fail or briefly error on certain prompts. Rephrase and avoid the flagged content.

Invalid parameter errors. A flag is incorrect. Common mistakes:

  • --ar format: colons only. --ar 16:9 works. --ar 16x9 does not.
  • --stylize range: 0 to 1000. Outside that range fails.
  • --chaos range: 0 to 100.
  • --quality: valid values are .25, .5, and 1.
  • --version: check which versions are current. Deprecated versions error.

Strip all parameters and run the prompt plain. If it generates, add parameters back one at a time. The flag that breaks it is the problem.

Job completed but output is blank or corrupted. Reload, check if the image appears in your feed, and try Re-run. If the problem persists across multiple attempts, check the status page. This is usually a backend issue, not a prompt issue.

Subscription and Payment Issues

Subscription looks active but generation is not working. Type /info in Discord or check account settings on the web app. These show your plan, renewal date, and remaining Fast hours. If the web app shows an account issue message, take it at face value.

Payment failed. Midjourney sends notifications to the email address on your account, which may not be the same email connected to your Discord account. Check that inbox. Update payment info in account settings at midjourney.com.

Subscription auto-renewed unexpectedly. Midjourney subscriptions renew monthly or yearly by default. Turn off auto-renewal in account settings on midjourney.com. The subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period.

Downgraded tier and job slot counts dropped immediately. Expected. Tier changes take effect immediately, not at the next billing cycle.

Billing issue that needs resolution. Email [email protected]. For general product and account questions, go to docs.midjourney.com.

When Nothing Else Works

If you have worked through this list and something is still broken, it is almost always one of two things: a subscription or usage issue (check /info in Discord or account settings on the web app), or an active incident that has not been posted to the status page yet. Give it time and check the official Discord.

FAQ

Why is Midjourney not working?
The most common causes are an active service incident, a job queue limit, or a subscription issue. Go to status.midjourney.com first. If the website and Discord bot both show green, check that your subscription is active and your Fast hour balance is not empty.
Is Midjourney down right now?
Check status.midjourney.com. The page shows real-time status for the website and the Discord bot separately, along with average generation wait times per model. If either shows degraded performance or an outage, that is the cause of your problem.
What does 'job queue full' mean in Midjourney?
Midjourney limits how many jobs you can run at once. Basic and Standard plan users get 3 concurrent Fast image jobs. Pro and Mega users get 12 concurrent Fast image jobs. If your queue is full, wait for current jobs to finish or switch to Relax mode on Standard or higher plans, which has no image concurrency limit.
Why does Midjourney say 'invalid parameter' on my prompt?
Invalid parameter errors happen when you use a flag that doesn’t exist or a value outside the allowed range. Common mistakes: –ar 16:9 is valid, –ar 16x9 is not. The –stylize value must be between 0 and 1000. Strip all parameters and run the prompt plain, then add flags back one at a time to isolate the problem.
What is Midjourney Thinking Mode and why can't I find it in the main app?
Thinking Mode is an alpha feature that reruns a V8.2 image with extra processing to improve prompt accuracy, typography, and coherence. As of November 2026, it is only available at alpha.midjourney.com, not the main Midjourney app. To use it, generate an image, open it in the lightbox, and click ‘Rerun (Thinking)’ in the lower right corner.
How do I contact Midjourney support?
For billing issues, email [email protected]. For product and account questions, visit docs.midjourney.com or join the official Midjourney Discord server and go to the support channel.
