Pika AI videos not generating? You’re probably about 30 seconds away from a fix.
Most Pika issues fall into one of four buckets: server-side problems, credit balance issues, browser weirdness, or input file problems. The AI is working. Something in that chain isn’t. This guide runs through each in the order that catches most problems first.
Updated November 2026 for Pika H3 Flex, which Pika says is coming to the Pika creation product on November 2 (Source). New sections cover the 12-reference input limit, audio stems, and the 4K upscaler workflow.
Start Here: Check Pika’s Server Status
Before touching any settings: load pika.art and look for any error banners or announcements. Pika publishes a public status page at status.pika.art.
If there’s an active outage, the fix is to wait. That’s annoying, but no amount of prompt tweaking or tab-reopening will fix a backend problem. Subscribe to their updates and check back in an hour.
If everything looks normal on their end, now we’re actually diagnosing something.
Quick Fixes (Try These First)
Hard reload the page. Sounds dumb. Works constantly. Press Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+R on Mac. This bypasses cached assets that can leave the Pika UI in a weird half-loaded state where generations silently fail.
Check your credit balance. Go to your account settings. Look at remaining credits. Pika’s error messaging when you’re out of credits is not great. Sometimes it just fails without a clear notice. An empty balance is the most common cause of a generation that looks broken but isn’t.
Try incognito mode or a different browser. Open Pika in a private window. Extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy badgers, and script blockers, can interfere with generation in ways that produce confusing errors. If incognito works, that’s your culprit.
Log out and back in. Your session token can expire or get into a bad state. Not common, but it takes 30 seconds and it does fix things occasionally.
Generation Failures and Errors
OK so the quick fixes didn’t do it. Let’s get into specific errors.
Videos Not Generating (Blank/Loading Forever)
The generation kicks off, the progress spinner runs, and then nothing. Or it just hangs indefinitely.
What’s usually happening: The generation is failing server-side, but the UI isn’t surfacing the error cleanly. This happens most often during high-load periods or when a prompt hits an edge case in the model.
Fix: Wait 5-10 minutes and try again with a simpler prompt. If you were using a complex, multi-part description, cut it in half. Start with the core of what you want and build from there. If every attempt is hanging, it’s almost certainly a server-side issue. Come back later.
One thing worth knowing: Pika’s generation queue is real. During busy periods, your job is queued, not failed. The UI doesn’t always make this distinction clear. Give it some extra time before deciding something is broken.
Generation Stuck at 99%
The progress bar crawls to 99% and then just sits there. Indefinitely.
What’s happening: The generation finished server-side and got stuck in the delivery handoff. The file exists. It just isn’t reaching you.
Fix:
- Wait 3-5 minutes. Sometimes it unsticks on its own.
- Hard reload the page (
Ctrl+Shift+R/Cmd+Shift+R). - Navigate to your generation history. The completed video often shows up there even when the progress UI is stuck.
- If it’s truly gone, retry the generation. Contact support if it used credits.
Shorter clips and lower resolutions are less likely to hit this. If you’re consistently getting it on long generations, try breaking your content into shorter clips.
Generation Failed / Error Message
If Pika returns an actual error message rather than just hanging, that’s more specific to work with.
“Content policy violation”: your prompt triggered a filter. This can happen with violence, explicit content, certain real people, or anything that looks like it might be used to create misleading media. The fix is to rephrase.
“File format not supported”: you uploaded a source image or video that Pika doesn’t like. Supported image formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP. Supported video formats: MP4 is the safest bet. Re-export your source in a supported format and re-upload.
“Source video too long”: Pika’s vid2vid feature has duration limits. Trim your clip down to within the supported limit. H3 Flex clips cap at 15 seconds; Pika 2.5 runs five seconds from a prompt, five or ten from a photo, one to five per keyframe transition (Source).
Generic “Something went wrong”: genuinely unhelpful error. Check credits, try the hard reload, wait a few minutes, and try again. If this persists across multiple sessions and days, it’s worth contacting support.
Pika 2.5 Feature-Specific Issues
For H3 Flex issues, see the next section.
Pikaframes Not Working
Pikaframes interpolates through two to five uploaded images to create a smooth video transition (Source). Great feature in theory. In practice, it has some fussiness.
Common failure modes:
- Images too dissimilar. Pikaframes needs visual continuity between your frames. If the images are wildly different compositions, the interpolation breaks. Try images that share subject matter or color palette.
- Too many frames at once. More frames means more compute means more failure surface. Start with 3-4 frames, get that working, then add more.
- Resolution mismatch. Mixing portrait and landscape orientation images confuses the interpolation. Use consistent aspect ratios.
Pikaswaps Not Working
Pikaswaps lets you select an object in a video and replace it with something else. It’s an inpainting feature, sensitive to selection quality.
If Pikaswaps keeps failing or producing garbage results:
- The selection area matters a lot. Paint the full object, not just a rough outline. The better the mask, the better the swap.
- Try on shorter clips first (under 5 seconds). Pikaswaps on longer clips is more likely to produce inconsistent results across frames.
- Very busy backgrounds or fast-moving subjects don’t swap well. Cleaner, simpler shots work better.
Pikaffects Issues
These are the physics-based visual effects (melting, morphing, exploding, etc.). If they’re not applying correctly:
- If the effect is barely visible, your source image might have too much detail competing with it. Try the effect on a simpler image first to confirm it’s working, then adjust from there.
- If you’re running low, that can cause silent failures. Check your balance.
Pika H3 Flex Issues
Pika says H3 Flex is coming to the Pika creation product on November 2 (Source). It runs alongside Pika 2.5. Same platform, different model. If you’re on H3 Flex and hitting errors the earlier sections don’t cover, these are the H3 Flex-specific failure modes.
12 Reference Inputs: Common Failure Causes
H3 Flex accepts up to 12 reference files: images, video, and audio combined. That flexibility creates new ways to break a generation.
File type mismatches. H3 Flex accepts images (PNG, JPEG or WebP), video files, and audio files as references (Source). Non-standard formats or overly compressed files can cause silent failures. Re-export problem files in a clean, widely supported format before re-uploading.
Too many mismatched references. Combining up to 9 visually unrelated images often produces incoherent output rather than a clean error message (Source). More references are not always better. Start with 3-4 clearly related references, confirm the generation works, then build up.
Audio reference quality. If you’re using a voice sample as an audio reference and the output doesn’t match the voice, check your recording. Background noise and low-fidelity audio give the model less to work with.
Audio Stems
H3 Flex exports Dialogue, Music, and Effect as separate WAVs (Source).
Audio stem separation is available through the Pika API at dev.pika.art. The consumer product generates synchronized stereo audio embedded in the video file.
4K Export: Upscaler Required
H3 Flex does not generate 4K natively. Native output is 480p or 768p. Getting to 1080p, 2K, or 4K requires running the Pika upscaler. Pika hosts this as a post-generation feature.
The workflow: generate at 768p, pick the output you want, then upscale. If your 4K export isn’t materializing, check whether you’ve actually triggered the upscale step.
If the upscaler fails or stalls:
- Hard reload and check your generation history. The upscaled version may appear there even if the progress UI froze.
- The upscaler consumes additional credits; verify your balance before retrying.
- The upscaler is a Pika-hosted feature, not part of the open-weights release.
15-Second Clip Limit
H3 Flex supports clips up to 15 seconds. Any H3 Flex request beyond 15 seconds will fail or be cut. For content that needs more length, stitch multiple H3 Flex clips together in post.
Video Quality Issues
This one frustrates people because it’s not broken in the traditional sense. Output is worse than expected. The fix depends on why.
Blurry or low-resolution output. H3 Flex generates natively at 480p or 768p. The 1080p, 2K, and 4K outputs are upscaled. Run the Pika upscaler after generation to get there. Also check your source material: Pika’s output quality is bounded by your input quality. Starting with a low-resolution image and expecting crisp HD output won’t work. Garbage in, garbage out.
Weird artifacts or distorted motion. This is the model struggling with something in your prompt or source material. Common triggers: complex backgrounds, fast motion, multiple subjects, unusual aspect ratios. Try:
- Simplifying the scene description
- Using a cleaner, simpler source image
- Reducing the motion intensity in your prompt
- Shortening the clip duration
Inconsistent results from the same prompt. Not a bug. This is how generative models work. The same prompt can produce meaningfully different results each run. If you got one good output and want to reproduce it, use the seed value (if Pika surfaces it) or use their variation tools to iterate from the good result.
For a deeper look at what quality levels Pika actually delivers across use cases, our Pika AI review has specific examples.
Slow Processing
Pika runs on shared compute. Load matters.
The generation queue gets backed up during peak usage. Not ideal if you’re on a deadline, but it’s not broken.
With H3 Flex, generation itself is fast. The model can generate a 15-second clip at 768p in as little as seven seconds of transformer computation (Source).
What actually helps:
- Generate during off-peak hours
- Start with shorter clips and lower resolution to test your concept, then do a higher-quality generation once you’ve got the prompt dialed in
- Avoid regenerating the same prompt over and over if it’s queued. You’re just adding more jobs to the pile.
What doesn’t help: Refreshing the page repeatedly. Canceling and restarting. These don’t jump the queue. They just add new jobs.
If slow generation is a consistent problem regardless of time of day, it may be an account-tier issue. The Fancy plan gets priority queue access; Free, Starter, and Creator do not (Source).
Account and Subscription Problems
Out of Credits Mid-Project
Pika’s credit system can catch you off guard if you’re doing a lot of iteration.
Pika has four plans: Free ($0/month, 0 credits, packs only), Starter ($8/month annual or $10/month monthly, 900 credits), Creator ($28/month annual or $35/month monthly, 3,150 credits), and Fancy (from $76/month annual or $95/month monthly, 8,550+ credits). The full breakdown is in our Pika pricing guide.
Check your usage: Go to account settings. If you’re burning through credits faster than expected, check whether you’re generating at the highest resolution setting by default. Lower resolution drafts use fewer credits. H3 Flex’s upscaler step also consumes additional credits.
Your plan renewed but credits didn’t reset. Usually a display lag. Give it a few minutes and hard reload. If credits still show depleted after 15-20 minutes, contact support with your subscription confirmation email handy.
Payment Failed / Subscription Issues
Pika uses Stripe for billing. Check the email associated with your Pika account.
To update payment info: go to your account settings, find the billing section, and update your card. After updating, try generating. You don’t usually need to do anything else to reactivate a lapsed subscription once payment goes through.
Charged but still on free tier. Pika says this nearly always means you are signed in to a different account from the one you subscribed with (Source). If it persists, contact support with your payment confirmation.
Audio Sync Issues
Lip sync off on generated talking-head videos. Quality depends heavily on your source:
- Face should be clearly visible, well-lit, not at an extreme angle
- Source video should be clean audio with minimal background noise
- Shorter clips sync better.
If you’re using Pika specifically for high-stakes talking-head video with custom voices, HeyGen and Synthesia are still purpose-built for this use case and handle lip sync more reliably at scale. Pika’s lipsync is usable for casual social content; it’s not at the precision level of dedicated tools.
Audio added after generation is out of sync. This usually means the audio file’s timing doesn’t line up with the clip. Trim your audio to match the clip length, or use Pika’s built-in audio features instead of adding audio externally.
Sound effects generated with the wrong timing. Pika has motion-aware sound effects that automatically match on-screen action. If the timing is off, try regenerating. The motion-aware system isn’t perfectly reliable on all clip types. For manual sound effects, try regenerating with a more specific sound description that references timing (“a single thud at the start as the object lands”).
Music generation not matching the mood. Be specific: reference tempo, energy level, instrumentation. “Upbeat electronic with a driving synth bassline” works better than “energetic music.”
Export Errors
You generated a great clip. Now it won’t download.
Download button does nothing. Almost always a browser/extension issue. Try:
- Disable your ad blocker or content script blocker
- Try in a different browser (Chrome or Firefox are most reliable)
- Try in incognito mode
- Check that you’re not blocking third-party cookies (some download mechanisms use them)
Export hangs or stalls. If the download starts and stops, it could be a network blip. Try right-clicking the download link and doing “Save Link As” to download directly. Alternatively, reload the page, find your completed generation in your history, and download from there.
File downloads corrupted. Rare, but if an MP4 plays wrong or won’t open, re-download it. If you get the same corrupted file twice, it’s a server-side issue with that specific generation. Generate a new one. It’s unlikely to recur.
When to Contact Pika Support
You’ve tried everything above. Something is still wrong. Here’s when it’s worth reaching out.
Contact support if:
- You were charged but your account didn’t upgrade or credits didn’t reset
- A generation failed and used credits without producing output (and this keeps happening)
- You’re consistently getting errors that don’t match any of the above causes
- Your account is locked or you can’t log in despite correct credentials
- Generation stuck at 99% repeatedly, especially if credits were consumed
How to reach them: Navigate to pika.art and use their support link. Include:
- Your account email
- The date and approximate time of the issue
- Your generation ID if you have one
- Screenshots of any error messages
What support can’t fix: Prompt quality, model output variation, or generation results you don’t like aesthetically. Those aren’t bugs. That’s the nature of generative AI. Experimenting with prompts is the path forward there.
FAQ
Why is Pika AI not generating my video? Usually a credit balance issue, a server-side problem, or a prompt that hit a content filter. Check credits first, then check if Pika has announced any issues. Simplify your prompt as a last step.
Why is my Pika video blurry? For H3 Flex, native generation is 480p or 768p. Run the Pika upscaler to reach 1080p, 2K, or 4K. Your source file quality matters too: start with higher-resolution inputs.
Can I use Pika AI for free? Yes. Pika has a free tier with $0/month and no included credits (credit packs only). Commercial rights are not included on the Free plan. They start at the Starter tier. See the full breakdown in our Pika pricing guide.
Why is Pikaframes stuck or failing? Most Pikaframes failures come from source images that are too dissimilar or too many frames at once. Start with 3-4 visually related JPEG images and work up from there.
Does Pika’s lipsync actually work? Well enough for casual social content. For professional talking-head work where sync accuracy matters, dedicated tools like HeyGen still have an edge. H3 Flex generates synchronized audio as part of the video file.
What’s different about Pika H3 Flex vs. Pika 2.5? They’re separate models on the same platform. H3 Flex is Pika’s post-trained version of MiniMax H3: it accepts up to 12 reference files, generates synchronized stereo audio, and produces native 480p or 768p output with a Pika-hosted upscaler to 1080p, 2K, or 4K. Clips cap at 15 seconds. Pika 2.5 supports a different set of creation features, including Pikaframes. Use whichever fits the job.
